NASCAR Hall of Fame's 25 nominees for first class to be announced Thursday
By SceneDaily Staff Monday, June 29, 2009 The first 25 nominees for the NASCAR Hall of Fame’s inaugural class will be announced Thursday night. The Hall of Fame Voting Panel, which includes a fan-vote element, will then choose the first class of five inductees who will be honored next May at the Hall in Charlotte. The 25 names were determined by a 21-member nominating committee that consists of officials from both NASCAR and the NASCAR Hall of Fame, plus owners/operators of major speedways and historic short tracks. The list is said to include many who helped build the sport, including drivers, owners and promoters. NASCAR will release the names of a handful of nominees with daily blogs on NASCAR.com leading into Thursday. The announcement will take place during an hour-long special on Speed (8 p.m. ET) that will be hosted by long-time NASCAR broadcaster Ken Squier. The show will count down all 25 nominees with background and footage of each of them. Immediately following the broadcast, NASCAR.com will go live with a gallery of all 25 nominees and will open registration for the fan vote. A far as I'm concerned they could have left out the fan vote. You'd think the panel would be competent to decide this without input from the fans.

Bobby Allison, Darrell Waltrip among Hall of Fame nominees
By Bob Pockrass - Associate Editor scenedaily.com Tuesday, June 30, 2009 NASCAR has announced two of the 25 initial candidates for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip, who are tied at third all-time 84 Cup victories apiece, are among the 25 nominees, NASCAR announced Tuesday. The sanctioning body will announce all 25 nominees Thursday night. A panel of 48 voters will select the five members of the inaugural class, which will be inducted in May 2010. One of the 48 votes will come from a collective fan vote done on NASCAR’s official Web site, NASCAR.com. Both of them should be inducted in the initial ballot. They are both true nascar legends.

I'm going with:
Lee Petty Glen Wood Fireball Robert Junior Johnson Red Byrum I don't think that anyone involved with Nascar's later era should be put in there in front of the forefathers, not Hendrick, Childress, Earnhardt, Parson, etc, but the people that made it happen in the first place.

I said earlier that DW and Bobby Allison should be inducted in the initial vote, but I had to change my mind after seeing the list of candidates.
Here's my list of the initial 5. Big Bill France Buck Baker Red Byron Tim Flock Curtis Turner

I'm not a fan of their "5 person" first class -
Take 4 drivers- early years 3 drivers - later era 3 non-driver, either era 2 media either era.

I already voted on the 'other' site but I will say that for the first choices I don't think DW needs to be on that list.
Oh yes, his early career was a wowser, I'll give you that. Part of the wowserness, though, can be directly attributed to Gary Nelson who took cheating to a high art form. I don't mean 'creative engineering' and I don't mean 'finding loopholes' and I don't even mean 'bending the rules and going around them' -- I mean flat out, no excuses CHEATING. Nitrous oxide, buckshot. And those are just the ones we know about. Every good run he had with Jr. Johnson/Gary Nelson is suspect IMNSHO

I agree DW should not be voted in on the first ballot. Too many valid candidates from earlier era's for him to be amongst the first 5. Personally I think the first group should be at least 10. I have no problem with a team trying to cheat, but what does IMNSHO mean?
