Kyle Busch aiming for 'at least four' victories
By Jeff Gluck - Associate Editor Posted Fri., Feb. 15, 2008 / DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Often walking the line between confident and cocky, Kyle Busch is just trying to be honest. And in his mind, since he has as much talent as anyone in the garage, winning one or two Sprint Cup Series races per year is just not going to cut it. “That’s not acceptable. That’s not sufficient,” Busch said Friday afternoon, eyes hiding behind sunglasses in the shade of his sponsor’s motorcoach. Busch chatted with a group of reporters prior to practice at Daytona International Speedway, looking relaxed in an M&Ms-filled setting while a cardboard cutout of himself stood at attention behind him. “For what everybody has told me about my talent level and everything, they always give me high praise,” he said. So in that vein, Busch said, he should win “at least four” races per season. “That’d be more accepting of my standards, I guess,” he said. Busch has won one Cup race in each of the last two years after winning two – and becoming the youngest driver ever to win a Cup race – in 2005. That was at Hendrick Motorsports, where Busch had access to what many consider to be the best equipment in the garage. But after Hendrick decided to sign Dale Earnhardt Jr., Busch was left looking for another team that would provide him with the same opportunity. Joe Gibbs Racing looked good, but when Busch began talking to the team, it mentioned a possible switch from Chevrolet to Toyota. “That was my only apprehension about going to Gibbs, was the Toyota struggles of last year,” he said. Team president J.D. Gibbs mentioned a potential change to Busch during their first meeting. In the second meeting, the Toyota talk increased. By the third meeting, Busch said he was ready to pepper Gibbs with questions about the new manufacturer. “I said, ‘Look guys, it’s coming down to crunch time. What’s the deal?’” Busch recalled. “That’s when they told me they were going to make the switch, and then I had my questions, and we went through it. Basically ... if they didn’t feel like the switch was going to be the right move, then they wouldn’t have done it.” Busch said he wanted to know what Gibbs was thinking. He wanted to know why they would join Toyota, and why they would leave Chevrolet, which he described as a company that “has been the dominant manufacturer forever.” “Their reasonings were that the manufacturer support was going to be better, they were going to get more through [Toyota Racing Development] and more [wind] tunnel time, more motor test time...and the parts and the pieces and everything. As soon as all of that really gets rolling, which I expect to be about May or June, we’re going to be at full force.” And then, Busch might be able to start finding victory lane enough for his liking.
