JGR officials say team wishes Stewart well in the future
By SceneDaily Staff Wednesday, July 09, 2008 Joe Gibbs Racing officials say the parting of the team and driver Tony Stewart is on good terms, and JRG officials wish Stewart well in his future. The team announced in a news release Wednesday that Stewart will finish the 2008 Sprint cup season and then part ways with the team. Sources said Stewart is moving to Haas CNC Racing as a driver/co-owner in 2009. “We’ve had a lot of success with Tony in our 12 years here at Joe Gibbs Racing,” JGR President J.D. Gibbs said. “While this moment is bittersweet, we’re parting on good terms, and we know that each of us has benefited greatly from the other. “We grew to two teams in the Sprint Cup Series with Tony and The Home Depot in 1999, and two championships and 32 wins followed. While our time together is coming to an end, we know there’s still a lot of racing left this season, and we plan to make the most of it. “On behalf of everyone at JGR, we’re proud of everything we’ve accomplished together with Tony, and we wish him the best in pursuing his dream of NASCAR team ownership.” Stewart drove five races for JGR in 1997 in what is now known as the Nationwide Series. He won the Indy Racing League championship that year, as well, and then ran 22 races in NASCAR’s No. 2 series for Gibbs in 1998. He moved to the Cup series as a rookie the following season, winning Rookie of the Year. Stewart later won the 2002 and 2005 Cup championships for JGR. “The 20 car has been one of the all-time great partnerships in NASCAR for the last decade with the combination of Tony, [crew chief Greg Zipadelli], The Home Depot and Joe Gibbs Racing,” said Joe Gibbs, owner of Joe Gibbs Racing. “While we are losing one piece of the puzzle, we think the No. 20 team will remain strong for many years to come.” The team did not name a replacement for Stewart, but one possibility is 18-year-old Joey Logano, who made his Nationwide Series debut earlier this year and won in his third start at Kentucky Speedway. JGR says crew chief Zipadelli will remain with team next season
By SceneDaily Staff Wednesday, July 09, 2008 Tony Stewart has only had one crew chief for all 338 of the Cup series races in his career, Greg Zipadelli, but that appears likely to change next season. As part of Joe Gibbs Racing’s announcement Wednesday that Stewart will leave the team at the end of the 2008 season, a news release also said his parting “will end the longest active driver/crew chief relationship in the Sprint Cup garage.” “No matter what, Tony and I will remain close friends,” Zipadelli said in the release. “I know when it comes to the No. 20 team, things will obviously be a lot different next year, but I remain as committed as ever this year to winning races with Tony and securing our spot in the Chase [For The NASCAR Sprint Cup] to contend for a third championship.” Stewart said Zipadelli is the “best example” of JGR’s philosophy of surrounding him with “great people.” “We’ve accomplished so much in our 10 years together on the track, and off the track, he’s been like a big brother to me,” Stewart said. “It’s a friendship I cherish and expect to continue, even while he stays at Joe Gibbs Racing and I move on.” JGR says crew chief Zipadelli will remain with team next season - Sprint Cup Series | SceneDaily.com - NASCAR News

The Home Depot won't leave JGR with Stewart
By SceneDaily Staff Wednesday, July 09, 2008 Officials from The Home Depot, which has sponsored Tony Stewart through all 10 years of his NASCAR Cup career, had only nice things to say in the wake of Stewart's announcement Wednesday that he is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing and The Home Depot isn’t coming with him. Stewart, sources have said, will become co-owner of Haas CNC Racing, which will have Office Depot and Old Spice as sponsors of Stewart in 2009. Stewart has had tumultuous moments in his career, but The Home Depot stuck with him throughout. “The Home Depot has had a remarkable relationship with Tony Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing since our sponsorship commenced back in 1998,” said Frank Bifulco, chief marketing office for the home improvement chain. “With two NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships and 32 race wins, Tony is a true competitor and an excellent ambassador for our company.” Bifulco said in the statement that the company’s future plans “will be announced at a later date.” The Home Depot’s contract with JGR runs through next season.
