Default Home Depot Sells Off Sponsorship For Some Races

Home Depot Sells Off Sponsorship For Some Races

Josh Stewart

In an era where multiple primary sponsors have muddled the bond between driver and car, one of the more consistent images has been the orange No. 20 Home Depot ride of Tony Stewart.

But that relationship will be tweaked somewhat this year, as Joe Gibbs Racing President J.D. Gibbs told the Press Wednesday that the home improvement warehouse has sold off the primary sponsorship for some races to another company.

"At times we'll bring people to them and say, 'Hey, what do you think,' and usually in the past they say, 'Thanks but no thanks,'" Gibbs said. "I think they found a partner here that makes sense for them."

Gibbs wouldn't divulge who the partner is, saying, "I'll let them go into all that detail when the time is right." He did add, though, that the agreement is more than a one-off deal.

Stewart, a member of the Coca-Cola Racing Family, ran a car with the soft drink company's sports beverage, POWERade, as the primary sponsor at Dover in 2006.

Home Depot has shared primary signage with assorted other sponsors, including animated movies Shrek 2 and Madagascar, for one-off races in the past.

A Home Depot PR rep reached by the Press following the interview with Gibbs had no comment other than adding that such announcements would be made by JGR. But without prompting, the spokesperson asked if anything had been mentioned during the interview about restaurant chain Subway. Stewart regularly stars in commercials for the company, and his car has carried small signage of the company's logo.

Selling off races obviously saves money in a sport that is getting increasingly pricey to sponsor. But these partnerships can be as much about creating business-to-business opportunities as cutting costs, as witnessed by Aflac joining with Office Depot to serve as a primary sponsor for the Ford Fusion of Carl Edwards.

JGR's contracts with Stewart and Home Depot run through 2009.

They have been one of the last hold-outs for sharing, besides Alltel, so this doesn't suprise me and it is a money saver. I think Kyle has already driven two different cars in three races, and the FEd Ex car changes with each race from the Home Delivery to Air Freight to Ground, etc

It would be different seeing the Subway stuff more prominent on the #20 after seeing it on the #16 all those years.

Because anytime you say soy juice, you actually start to gag… We all know why there’s no soy milk, don't we? Because there’s no soy titty, is there? I was always told that in order to have milk, you must have breasts, and I have yet to see a soy bean with breasts!

Well, it seems to me they said "Subway" without actually saying it is Subway.

That would make sense - FedEx and Kinko's have had a long-running business arrangement.

Stewart's Toyota sporting different colors, sponsorship for 3 races
JIM UTTER
The Charlotte Observer
Thursday, Apr. 10, 2008

AVONDALE, Ariz. - For the first time in his Sprint Cup Series career, Tony Stewart will see something other than his traditional orange and white as he looks through the windshielf of his No. 20.

Subway restaurants will serve as primary sponsor for Stewart in three Cup races this season, beginning with Saturday's Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway. The paint scheme will also be used at the Aug. 31 race at California and Oct. 5 at Talladega, Ala.

The Home Depot, Stewart's sponsor since his Cup debut in 1999, will have signage on the car's quarterpanels in those three races.

"We appreciate that Home Depot is making it available for us for these races," said Tony Pace, chief marketing officer for Subway.

Subway has a yearlong associate sponsorship of the No. 20 and a personal services agreement with Stewart
