Rice injures knees in crash at Indy
Posted: Thursday May 11, 2006 6:07PM; Updated: Thursday May 11, 2006 6:07PM INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Former Indianapolis 500 winner Buddy Rice bruised his knees after crashing during practice Thursday for the May 28 race. The 30-year-old Rice won the 500 in 2004 but was unable to defend his title last May after being injured in a hard crash during practice. On Thursday, the Rahal Letterman Racing driver was turning laps at around 220 mph when he lost control and hit the outside wall in turn two on the 2.5-mile oval, then spun into the inside wall. He was checked out at the infield hospital and released. He will be examined again Friday morning by track doctors before being cleared to drive. "It's weird," Rice said. "It just took off. We weren't even in the turn yet when I lost it. "This is somewhat like last year, but we'll be OK. We just need to come back tomorrow and get cleared. We'll get the backup [car] out and start going to work. This team is tough. We'll be back." In last year's crash, Rice partially tore a spinal ligament and sustained a concussion when he went backward into the wall. He underwent three weeks of rehabilitation before he was cleared to drive. Shortly after Rice's crash, second-year driver Marty Roth also spun in turn two but did not make contact with the wall. Find this article at: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...si_motorsports
