Brazilian "Super Sub" Moreno to replace injured Indy-car racer AFP March 29, 2006 ST. PETERSBURG, United States (AFP) - Brazilian driver Roberto Moreno, nicknamed "Super Sub" after a history of substituting for injured racers, will replace American Ed Carpenter at an Indy-car event Sunday. The 47-year-old veteran will start in the Indy-car Grand Prix of St. Petersburg after Carpenter suffered a bruised lung in a pre-race practice crash last Sunday in Homestead that killed US Indy Racing League driver Paul Dana. Carpenter, the stepson of series owner Tony George, was released from a Miami hospital on Monday but has not yet been cleared to drive despite being listed in good condition. His first possible start for the IRL season would come in next month's oval race at Japan. Moreno served as a consultant for Carpenter's race team and set up his car during tests last year in California and the road course at Watkins Glen, New York. Sunday's event is a road-course race on the streets of the Florida city. "Indy-cars are quite tough, but I suddenly realized how quickly I was able to rely on my experience to get the car up to the pace," Moreno said after a practice run. "It's very tough to replace a driver and it is very difficult to just jump in a car and drive," Moreno said. "I was glad to be able to get in the car a little bit already this week. "While I know road course racing, Im not as confident about the car, but the team will give me the info that I need to be competitive and comfortable in the car." Moreno hopes to find backing for two other IRL road-course starts and May's 90th Indianapolis 500.
