Carpenter released from Miami hospital

March 27, 2006

MIAMI (AP) -- Ed Carpenter, who was involved in the crash that killed rookie Paul Dana at Homestead-Miami Speedway, was released from the hospital Monday.

IRL officials said Carpenter, stepson of league founder Tony George, is recovering from a bruised lung and hasn't been cleared to drive in Sunday's race at St. Petersburg.

Carpenter hit the wall during the morning warmup for the season-opening Toyota Indy 300 on Sunday. His car had nearly come to a halt when Dana's car, which didn't appear to slow down, slammed into his. Dana was pronounced dead two hours later.
