Drivers Hurt in Accident RacingOne Report Posted Sunday, March 26, 2006 HOMESTEAD, Fla. - An early morning accident at Homestead-Miami Speedway involving Vision Racing's Ed Carpenter and Rahal Letterman Racing's Paul Dana has put a somber mood around the first race of the 2006 IRL IndyCar season. The crash, which took place shortly after 10 a.m. (ET), occurred during the last practice session prior to today's race. It started when Carpenter lost control and touched the wall coming off Turn 2. The Vision Racing machine lost momentum and stopped on the backstretch of the speedway. While other drivers managed to avoid the disabled vehicle, Dana hit the car head on. No word has been released by either the Indy Racing League or the teams, television reports are quoting Vision Racing General Manager Larry Curry saying that his driver "would be fine." Both Dana and Carpenter were airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Dana, Carpenter injured in horrific practice crash By John Oreovicz Special to ESPN.com A violent accident involving the stepson of Indy Racing League founder Tony George occurred minutes into the final practice session for the Toyota Indy 300, the IRL IndyCar Series opener set for 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Ed Carpenter spun his Vision Racing car exiting Turn 2 of the 1.5- mile Homestead-Miami Speedway oval and hugged the outside wall before slowly creeping back onto the racing surface. It was nearly stopped when it was hit in the left-rear corner at nearly full speed by a car driven by Paul Dana, a 30-year old rookie driving for Rahal Letterman Racing. Indy Racing League officials said that Dana is in critical condition at Jackson Hospital in Miami, a Level 1 Trauma Center, with unspecified injuries. Carpenter is awake and alert. "I don't really know much other that he was flown to the hospital," said Dana's car owner Bobby Rahal. "We hope he's OK. It was a pretty vicious incident. We're thinking about Paul and hope he's in good shape." Dana, a former motorsports journalist with a degree from Northwestern, started three IndyCar Series races in 2005 for Hemelgarn Racing before breaking his back in a practice crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dana qualified a career-best ninth for Sunday's race, which would have been his first with the Rahal Letterman team. Vision Racing team manager Larry Curry was more optimistic about Carpenter's condition. "I've been told he is awake and alert and is going to be fine," Curry said. "They want to check him out at the hospital, but he should be fine." Practice had still not resumed an hour after the accident.
