Japanese racer named in first Indy 500 entries AFP March 14, 2006 INDIANAPOLIS, United States (AFP) - Japanese racer Kosuke Matsuura and American Scott Sharp were named to drive the first entries submitted for the 90th Indianapolis 500, race officials announced. The 33-car field for the May 28 race will be filled in qualifying earlier in the month, with the Honda-powered Dallara cars of Mexico's Adrian Fernandez likely to find their way into the lineup around the 2 1/2-mile (4km) oval. Matsuura, 26, seeks his third Indy start. The 2004 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year's best finish was 11th two years ago although his best starting position came last year in eighth, the center of the third row. His entry is co-owned by Mexican racer Fernandez and Aguri Suzuki, a former Formula One driver and current F1 team owner. Sharp, 38, was the 2001 Indy 500 pole winner. He seeks his 12th Indy start and an improvement upon his career-best seventh-place showing last year. Teams have until April 5 to submit entries for the Indy Racing League event.
