Default Danica drama

Danica drama good for IndyCar series

By Scott Serrano
PA SportsTicker Auto Racing Editor

Once again Danica Patrick stole the show with her off-track antics instead of her performance behind the wheel.

But that’s a good thing for the IndyCar series.

In a league starving for a bigger piece the NASCAR-dominated auto racing pie, any type of publicity is good.

And Danica keeps delivering.

On Saturday, the stunning series starlet confronted Milka Duno about her driving at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, leading to an exchange between the only two female drivers competing in the IndyCar Series.

Luckily for the IRL, a video of the incident was shot by a friend of Duno’s and was quickly plastered all over the internet.

During the altercation, Duno told Patrick on several occasions to “go away.” When Patrick didn’t leave immediately, Duno threw a towel in Patrick’s face, prompting Patrick to direct foul language at Duno before the minute-long incident ended.

“She came to my team and our pit box in a very bad way with bad words,” Duno said. “If you come in a nice way, perfect, we can talk. If you come in a bad way, you are going to find my bad side.

“I don’t like drama, and I told her, ‘Go away, you are not welcome.’”

Oh but the IRL loves Danica’s drama. How much so? The series posted the video clip on its own web site. Usually professional sports leagues shy away from showing their stars in such light, preferring to sweep incidents under the rug.

Not the IndyCar Series. Do you think there the league would be front and center on Monday if there hadn’t been this brush-up between two attractive women? Sorry Ryan Briscoe, but winning the race is back page news compared to Danica vs. Duno.

Sure, Danica brought the IndyCar series much publicity when she finally won her first race earlier this year in Japan, making her the first female to win a race in a major auto racing series.

But video of her charging down pit road during the Indianapolis 500, attempting to confront Briscoe after a pit road mishap and images of her grabbing and shoving Dan Wheldon last year in Milwaukee after an on-track incident has done just as much, if not more to gain exposure for the IRL.

Her scantily-clad pictorials don’t hurt either.

“She can push the guys because they cannot do anything to her, but she cannot push me,” Duno said.

The IndyCar must be salivating for Round Two.

It's a good thing Danica isn't in NASCAR
Jul 23

All I could think after watching the latest in what seems like a weekly pouty, whiny moment involving Danica Patrick is: Thank goodness NASCAR's most popular driver doesn't act like the IndyCar Series' most popular driver.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. would never throw fits and stomp his feet when things don't go his way, like a spoiled child would. Yet if you do anything to slow Danica down, she apparently feels the need to confront and embarrass her competitors in a highly public way.

This weekend, Queen Danica (who has exactly one win – a fuel-mileage victory at that) stormed down to confront fellow driver Milka Duno after practice.

Someone had a video camera, which captured Danica telling Duno "It's not my fault you're slow." Danica seems to do things like this quite often, whether it's throwing a tantrum after a race or getting in the face of a rival driver.

"She came to my team and our pit box in a very bad way with bad words," Duno told the Indianapolis Star. "If you come in a nice way, perfect, we can talk. If you come in a bad way, you are going to find my bad side.

"I don't like drama, and I told her, 'Go away, you are not welcome.'"

Danica was unsatisfied with the resolution of the incident and said it got extra attention because of who she is.

"It's kind of the line that I walk because I'm popular," she told the Star.

I'm pretty sure Earnhardt Jr. would never act that way or talk like that. If he did, given the amount of media coverage he generates just by scratching his nose, it would certainly be a headache for the entire sport.

Everyone who follows NASCAR should be thankful that we have Dale, not Danica.
