Marlboro butts out, leaves cigarette void in U.S. racing
By A.J. Perez, USA TODAY The recently completed IRL IndyCar Series season marked the end of an era in American motor sports and, in turn, the beginning of one. For the first time in decades, no cigarette brand will be the sponsor of any car, race or series in major U.S. racing with the announcement Friday that Philip Morris' Marlboro will no longer be emblazoned on Team Penske's two Indy cars next season. "From a nostalgic standpoint, it will be different," Penske Performance president Tim Cindric said Sunday at Dover (Del.) International Speedway. Philip Morris will remain as the primary sponsor of the two-car effort, and the company still will invite its cigarette customers to IRL races, according to a release. Marlboro and Team Penske had been linked for 16 seasons. Philip Morris' continuing sponsorship of the team "will be conducted in compliance" with a 1998 Master Settlement Agreement, a deal with U.S. regulators that, among other things, limits sports sponsorship by tobacco companies. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor...p_x.htm?csp=34
