New Iowa track may host IRL race
Posted: Thursday May 25, 2006 3:58PM; Updated: Thursday May 25, 2006 3:58PM DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The new Iowa Speedway in Newton could host an Indy Racing League race in 2007 if a proposed deal is completed this week. The 7/8-mile oval track, designed by former NASCAR champion Rusty Wallace, will test the open-wheeled race cars popularized in the Indianapolis 500 race on Aug. 2, said track spokesman Mike Beecher. Wallace told WHO-TV on Wednesday that he hopes to finalize the deal for a 2007 race this week. Beecher said Wallace has set a press conference for 1:45 p.m. central time Friday at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to discuss a major development for the Iowa Speedway. Beecher said he was not authorized to release details. Wallace was in Newton on Wednesday to check progress on the track's construction. He has visited Newton a few times this year, test driving the track and making other recommendations. On Wednesday he directed developers to spend an extra $200,000 to move a building that would obstruct the view of spectators, WHO-TV reported. The track's inaugural season will include three stock car races Sept. 15-17 and two events Oct. 14-15. About 30,000 seats will completed this year. Additional seating will be added in 2007, Beecher said. Wallace, who won 55 Nextel Cup races, the eighth most in NASCAR history, ended his 21-year NASCAR career last year. He is 10 percent owner of the speedway. Development around the track also will include a hotel, a water park and restaurants http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...si_motorsports
