Set On Speed Control
Managing Editor Scott Speed has been on cruise control in the ARCA RE/MAX Series as of late. Over the last seven races, Speed has collected two of his three career wins and an average finish of 3.4. This weekend Speed will be shooting for three consecutive ARCA RE/MAX Series victories when he makes his 13th start of the season in Saturday’s Pennsylvania 200. If he happens to accomplish the feat he will become the first driver to do so since Frank Kimmel in 2005. “I am having the time of my life right now,” Speed said. “I actually can’t believe the roll we are on right now.” Pocono will mark the second track so far this season that the series will return to for a second time. The last was Kentucky on July 18, an event in which Speed won to start his string of consecutive wins. In his first trip to Pocono in June, Speed finished second after battling back from two cut tires. "Pocono is definitely one of our better tracks, so things should be quite interesting this weekend," said Speed, who is coming off a win at Berlin Raceway. Speed is currently in a heated battle for Rookie of the Year honors with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Matt Carter. Stenhouse, who won at Pocono last month, has held the lead in the series point standings for the last seven consecutive weeks. No rookie since 1995 (Andy Hillenburg) has won the series championship. But if one of these drivers were to pull off the championship, they can’t earn the rookie title at the same time per the ARCA Rulebook. Heading into Pocono, Speed trails Stenhouse by 55 points. “We are gaining ground each week on Ricky and hopefully this weekend will not be any different,” said Speed, who has picked up 30 extra points this season after winning two poles. With victories in both the ARCA Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series already in his young stock car/truck career, Speed now sets his sights on the Sprint Cup Series. He began that path earlier this week by testing a Red Bull Cup car. Speed’s next Truck Series start will come at Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 20 after a two month hiatus from the series. Speed’s lone Truck Series win came on a concrete track, like BMS, when he took the checkered flag at Dover International Speedway back in May. Saturday’s ARCA Pennsylvania 200 is scheduled to take the green flag at 1 p.m. (ET).
